MONTH OF MAMA: Body Back Instructor Spotlight

Meet one of our amazing booty kicking Body Back instructors, Katie Hess-Yoder!

Tell us about yourself and your family.

I have two little girls: Emma is 3 and Briana is 1.5. My husband and I moved out here from NYC about 6 years ago and have absolutely fallen in love with the PNW. I’m an attorney for my day job and instructing with Fit4Mom is my sanity break from it all.

What surprised you the most once you became a mom?

Honestly, it was that the full, all consuming connection to my girls didn’t come right away. You hear all these things about moms holding their newborns and having this life changing moment when they first look into their baby’s eyes. I really didn’t feel that instant connection – I didn’t have post-partum depression or anything, just found it hard to connect to my babies right away. The connection and amazing mom feelings slowing grew on me over the days, weeks, and months. Now, I get it and I am amazed by the complex range of emotions those kiddos bring out of me. #allthemomfeels

Why did you join FIT4MOM? Why do you love it?

I originally joined after my second girl was born just to get back in shape. I thought it would be a quick 8 week session to jumpstart my fitness routine again, and then I would be back in the gym like the old days. Boy was I wrong. In FIT4MOM I found not only great workouts, but an amazing community that I now don’t know what I would do without. I love the support in our village- not just the encouragement to do one more burpee, but the encouragement to better myself in so many other ways, and to also appreciate myself for all the amazing things I already am.

I now teach Body Back and Boost and LOVE every moment of it!

Where do you see yourself in 5 years? If you didn't have any obstacles, what dream would you pursue?

It may sound sad, but in 5 years I see myself exactly where I am today- just a bit older and wiser (and maybe more well rested?). I love my job, I love my family, I love where I live, and I love this village. I wouldn’t trade any of it. Ask me where I see myself in 10 years when my law school loans are paid off and the kids are old enough to watch themselves- you might get a different answer. J

What is your favorite go to piece of baby gear?

The stability ball. Neither of my girls like strollers or the rocking chair, but needed to be bounced in order to fall asleep. That thing was a life saver – especially at 3 in the morning when I was trying to get them back to sleep.

Any advice for new moms?

Don’t be so hard on yourself. You literally just created a new life and you are now responsible for keeping it alive. It’s hard. When you are feeling your worse, take a moment to step back and think about all that you have accomplished so far. You are amazing!
