November Mom of the Month: ALICIA SINGLETARY

Tell us about yourself and your family.

I’m originally from Tacoma and attended the University of Washington where I met my husband in the dorms freshman year. After graduating, we moved to San Francisco where we lived for four years but Seattle was calling us home and we moved back two years ago. We bought our first house in West Seattle last year where we live with our dog, Otis and two cats, Lo and Laney.

I’m a project manager for a marketing agency in Kirkland and my husband is a high school teacher in Seattle’s International District.

We are so excited to meet our little one in March/April (due date is March 30th so we’ll see where we land!)

What surprised you the most once you became pregnant?

I come from a large family and have been around a lot of pregnancies growing up but I never knew how many food restrictions there were! I remember when I first found out I was pregnant, before I had my first doctor’s visit, I was reading so many articles and blogs and was scared to eat basically anything. Of course I now know it’s not that bad except eliminating all my favorites from my diet like, eggs benedict, sushi, and poke… I am going to have a FEAST in April!

Why did you join FIT4MOM? Why do you love it?

My first trimester really kicked me in the butt. I was nauseous pretty much 24/7 and had zero energy. I was in bed by 8pmmost nights and felt so sluggish throughout my work days. My doctor encouraged me to start up an exercise routine and I knew how important it was to stay active during pregnancy, not only for myself but for the baby so when I started to feel like myself again around 13 weeks, I began researching prenatal classes in the area. Fit4Mom popped up and I gave it a try!

It has been so great to be active again but what I love most about Fit4Baby is being surrounded by other moms-to-be! None of my girlfriends have had kids so it’s nice to come to a class during the week and chit chat about being pregnant with ladies who also want to chat about being pregnant!

Where do you see yourself in 5 years? If you didn't have any obstacles, what dream would you pursue?

In five years, I hope to have recently had baby #2. We’d love to have our kids pretty close in age. I also don’t know how feasible it would be but my husband and I would love to continue to travel with kids. We love exploring new places and had planned to visit Colombia next summer before we found out we were expecting. We’d love to get that trip back on the agenda when baby is a bit older.

What is your favorite go to piece of prenatal gear (clothing, pillow, water bottle, massage etc?)

I loooooove my pregnancy pillow! It truly was a godsend. My husband jokingly asks if I’ll ever let him use it for a night but I don’t see that happening any time soon!

Any advice for new moms-to-be?

You know yourself best. If you need to slow down, do it and don’t feel bad for canceling plans and opting for a night in on the couch instead. I felt guilty for bailing on friends in the first few weeks after finding out I was pregnant but then I remembered my body is doing something spectacular and it’s ok to slow it down for a bit and give it the rest it needs.
