January Mom of the Month: MISSY GREEN

Tell us about yourself and your family.

Hi ladies! I’m Missy. My husband, Mark and I and our dog Sammie (now 13) have been in West Seattle for a bit over 6 years. We moved to the area from D.C. for my husbands job. Since we have added two kids, Finley (4) and Teagan (2). Fun fact, my whole family is Australian except me! I met my husband on a study abroad program in Sydney eons ago. Seattle has been a good compromise for living between the two worlds, a nice mix of my east coast fast pace and his Australian chill. I can not imagine living anywhere else!

What surprised you the most once you became a mom?

I was surprised how much of myself I felt I had lost (and how guilty I felt for feeling that way). My whole world flipped upside down in the first two years of motherhood. When I was 7 months pregnant my Dad got diagnosed with cancer, he finished his last chemo treatment the day my son was born and died right after my son turned 1. A couple months later I was pregnant with number 2. Not only was he gone, my North Star in many ways in my life, but I had disappeared too. My life pre-kids was filled with adventure, challenge, travel, and well, freedom. All of a sudden I woke up in a life where I was idle. I LOVE my kids but craved anything that used to make me feel alive.

Why did you join FIT4MOM? Why do you love it?

2 years ago I came across BodyBack and conned a couple friends into joining with me. I had been an athlete my whole (young) life and was still very active up until my first pregnancy. Then it all took a big backseat (like in the way, way back) to everything else going on in life. I had never done HITT workouts before and it took a lot of courage to show up to that first class. I was instantly hooked! I felt stronger, I did something for me and a good set of burpees made me feel like a ninja. That little piece of me was coming back. The village of ladies was amazing and encouraging. I love it all for many things but mostly for helping to kick start me into finding myself again in motherhood. Last summer I was lucky enough to be able to start the West Seattle FIT4MOM Run Club program! I love coaching an awesome, amazing, and inspiring group of women! Come join us!! We start our next session Wednesday, January 10th training for the Hot chocolate 5k/15k early March.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years? If you didn't have any obstacles, what dream would you pursue?

5 years? I can’t even plan for next month!! I would be onto my next career which will not involve sitting at a desk (career choice TBD) and living abroad with my little family. And I will be on day 1,865 of my running streak .

What is your favorite go to piece of baby gear?

The miracle blanket and the ergo. I loved bundling my littles in that carrier and heading out, hiking, walking, exploring the world! And the miracle blanket swaddles like a pro way longer than any other swaddle device I came across!

Any advice for new moms?

Be flexible!! These little kiddos have a way of throwing wrenches in best laid plans, big and small. And be patient and kind with yourself! Motherhood is a lot all at once and IT IS HARD! Try to give yourself a break, you are doing amazing things.
