Meet our February spotlight Body Back Mama, Alyssa!
Tell us about yourself and your family.
My name is Alyssa. I laugh at my own jokes, love giving other people compliments, and enjoy a good glass of whiskey occasionally. Once upon a time, I married my bearded best friend, Dan, who I've known since junior high, but didn’t start dating until after college. We have a beautiful 1 year old named Orion and he is the absolute light of our lives. We have 2 chihuahuas, Layla and Ziggy, that together make one whole dog. We’re pretty nice people, so please say hi if you ever see us!
What surprised you the most once you became a mom?
The amount of patience I have for my son since day 1. I don’t consider myself a very patient person at times and I actually really worried about my ability to stay calm and patient, especially in a situation with a crying child. I was pleasantly surprised to find that I could stay very calm, even during the most trying moments of early parenthood. Unfortunately, that didn’t always extend to my husband (sorry Dan!).
Why did you join FIT4MOM? Why do you love it?
After deciding to stay home with my son when he was almost 9 months old and realizing the majority of my friends and family live outside of West Seattle or work during the day, I knew that I really needed to challenge myself to get out and meet other people, otherwise my vocabulary was at risk of deteriorating into baby babble. I also really wanted to get back into better shape. When a neighbor suggested FIT4MOM, I figured it was worth a try. Not only do I love the challenging and fun workouts, but I’ve found an amazing group of women that I can find community with. Joining FIT4MOM has literally been one of the best decisions I have ever made for my own self care.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years? If you didn't have any obstacles, what dream would you pursue?
I want to be living some sort of adventure in 5 years. Maybe that’s living abroad with my family. Maybe that’s traveling solo somewhere with my son. Or possibly I’ll own my own business by then. I’ve always wanted to be a business owner, though have yet to decide exactly what that would look like. Maybe in 5 years I will have figured that out!
What is your favorite go to piece of baby gear?
Our BOB Stroller! This bad boy goes everywhere and still maintains a smooth ride for the little guy. I’ve also recently started jogging with it and it’s been wonderful! The only downside, in my opinion, used to be that it felt heavy and bulky. Now that I have my awesome mom muscles though, this thing is a piece of cake to lug around :)
Any advice for new moms?
I promise you will find your new normal! Your life has irrevocably changed. And while it’s amazing, it can also feel scary and overwhelming. Just know that in a week, two weeks, a month, you’ll start to find your new normal. And pretty soon, you’ll realize that your new normal is the best kind of normal because it includes your precious little darling.
