Tell us about yourself and your family.
My husband Jeremy and I moved to Seattle from Arizona in 2008. I love the Northwest. My husband (growing up in sunny AZ) does not always share my sentiments. : ) We have an almost 2 year old son and another on the way - due September 8th.
What surprised you the most once you became a mom?
Oh gosh...I don't know. Everything! You know those families that make getting out of the house with a newborn baby look easy? That was SO far from my reality! Everything felt like a struggle. But I also never realized the capacity my heart has to love...so much you physically feel it in every fiber of your being...and how emotional I would become over things that I never used to blink an eye at. I guess you could say it's how much I've cried since that first pregnancy...for a multitude of reasons! It was a rare occurrence before pregnancy but ever since that first little man started growing - so have the water works!
Why did you join FIT4MOM? Why do you love it?
Physical activity has always been my stress relief. I felt super pent up after giving birth and not being very active through that first pregnancy. I was ready to move and feel like me again!
I love it because it truly is a community. An outlet and resource for feeling healthy. Mentally and physically. Having so many amazing women around you that have been through it or are going through it (whatever it is at the time) helps affirm that you aren't all that crazy...and if you are, you should embrace it and throw a party because others are right there with you!
I also love it because if you step away for a while (life often gets in the way of what we all want to do) FIT4MOM is always right there...ready to welcome you back, along with Emily's beautiful, larger than life smile!
Where do you see yourself in 5 years? If you didn't have any obstacles, what dream would you pursue?
I've been trying to figure this out for the last 5 years... : ) Firm facts - my husband and I will be raising 2 young boys. Hoping they turn into productive, healthy, motivated, creative, caring, independent young men. Gentlemen, at that.
Professionally - I've been contemplating my next step for a while and I'm not sure what that is. I know it will involve something that allows me to work directly with people, be creative and feel challenged...but the industry and capacity has yet to be determined.
Sadly, I don't know that I've let myself consider what I would do if there were no obstacles. I'll mull on that for a while and perhaps it will help me discover that next path...
What is your favorite go to piece of baby gear?
I feel like we went through burp cloths like it was our job. I would say it was my favorite but definitely the most used (outside of bottles and pump parts!)
Any advice for new moms?
After going through it, I try really hard to only offer two pieces of advice:
1. Everyone will have an opinion or idea about what the "right" thing is to do. Listen to the information but ultimately, do what works for your family and what feels right to you, even if it's not what "they" say is best.
2. You will have an ideal for how things will be. "I'll be this kind of mom...we won't let the baby do that...Oh, I'd never do this...or always do that..." the list will go on and on. Knowing your ideal is great but then you find yourself smack dab in the middle of a reality that does not at all match your ideal. Let it go and just do what you need to do to get through it. When your plan and reality don't match - it's okay to change your plan! Sometimes it's all we can do to get through the day and we can always try again tomorrow!
