Tell us about yourself and your family.
Hello! My name is Jessy and I've lived in Seattle for almost 4 years with my husband, our two and a half year old, Vinnie, and our 2 German Shepherds. My husband, Nick, and I are both originally from Southeastern Massachusetts, but because of his job (US Coast Guard), we've moved around a lot in the past 9 years. Being so far from all of our families is hard, especially after having a child, but the awesome West Seattle community has made it a little easier. With great programs like PEPS, Co-op Preschool, and FIT4MOM West Seattle, I've come to love the area and will be super bummed to leave when the time comes. In my spare time, in the very rare occasion I have SPARE time, I am an artist. I love to paint, draw, photograph, crochet, and just overall create. I also have my own small business selling handmade gifts and such called "Bear With Me". During our family time, we enjoy camping and hiking in the many National Parks and other trails around this awesome area.
What surprised you the most once you became a mom?
I guess what surprised me the most shouldn't have been a surprise at all because as we are all warned throughout our pregnancies- being a mom is hard work! I mean, it's not like I ignored all of the warnings or advice, it's just one of those "you have to experience it for yourself" situations. My biggest surprise though, is while it's SO exhausting and constantly an uphill battle, it's the most fun and rewarding thing I've ever done or will do.
Why did you join FIT4MOM? Why do you love it?
Ive always struggled with weight and I've always been one of those who gets a gym membership, goes for a few weeks then gives up and essentially continues to pay for it while feeling super guilty. I originally joined FIT4MOM West Seattle with Stroller Strides and immediately found my sweet spot. I found what worked and loved how I was feeling but needed more guidance to reach my weight loss goal. Emily talked me into Body Back and now I'm seriously the happiest and healthiest I have ever been. The workouts, the accountability, the friendships, the community, the everything- I love every bit of it!
Where do you see yourself in 5 years? If you didn't have any obstacles, what dream would you pursue?
In 5 years I'd consider it a victory if I'm still in this mindset. Still happy, healthy and motivated. Though I'm unsure where the Coast Guard will take our family next, I'm hoping it's near another Fit4Mom group. In the off chance it isn't, maybe I'll start my own. I've also had a dream of having my own photography business or growing my current project into an actual profitable business; because who doesn't want to make money doing what they love?
What is your favorite go to piece of baby gear?
Probably my Ergo carrier. While we aren't solely a "baby-wearing family" and Vinnie's never really required it, it's convenience is worth its weight in gold. Now that he's outgrown it and I'm not ready to forfeit the option of "throwing him on" we're currently in the market for a toddler carrier. I can wear him until he's in high school right?
Any advice for new moms?
Make time for yourself and enjoy it. Pat yourself on the back because if you're trying, you're doing a marvelous job. Seriously love yourself. It's so much harder than it sounds (which is cheesy to say but hey- I love cheese) but give it a try because once you do, your world will change for the better. I owe a lot to Fit4Mom West Seattle and the lovely ladies who run this mother but if I didn't allow myself to love me and tell myself that I'm worth the time and dedication, then I wouldn't be the happy and healthy mom I am today.
