Meet our March 'Mom of the Month' and Stroller Strides Mama, Karen Amin and her adorable daughter, Arya!
Tell us about yourself and your family.
We are a family of three and transplants to Seattle. My husband is from Chicago and I'm from South Carolina. We got married 5 years ago and moved to Seattle for an adventure. Little did we know Seattle would capture our hearts and we would make the decision to stay for the long haul over a glass of wine and watching the sun set over the Olympics. We love to travel and I love the outdoors. I also enjoy reading and cooking and staying fit.
What surprised you the most once you became a mom?
How incredible every single small developmental moment means to me. One day she is grabbing her knee and the next day she is touching her toe and I'm jumping up and down cheering, "you are touching your toe!! You go girl!!". It such an incredible feeling watching this little human explore her environment and body and change and grow day to day!
Why did you join FIT4MOM? Why do you love it?
Being active is very important to me. It makes me feel strong in body and mind and the endorphins are delicious! I was active throughout my pregnancy and wondered how I was going to fit it in while being a mom 24/7. FIT4MOM is great! I get to bring my baby girl to workout with a community of like minded moms who are going through the same ups and downs. No need to find childcare and my daughter gets to see me get fit and strong!
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
I see myself with two kids living in Seattle with my husband and having adventures in the outdoors as a family. I see myself achieving a nice work life balance as a nurse practitioner working 1-2 days a week and spending the rest being a mom.
If you didn't have any obstacles, what dream would you pursue?
Travel the world and live in a new place every 1-2 years. I would love for my family to feel the world is their home. It would be amazing to experience how other cultures live through such immersion.
What is your favorite go to piece of baby gear?
I love my moby wrap. When my daughter is inconsolable I put her in the wrap and it magically calms her down and makes her feel safe and warm and she falls asleep. I call it my magic wrap.
Any advice for new moms?
First, there will be many things in the first few weeks you will worry about and keep a count of- how much your baby is peeing, pooping, feeding, sleeping. All your doctors and nurses will want to know those numbers and will ask you over and over again. At the end of the day, don't get bogged down on the details- as long as your baby is peeing, pooping, and growing you are doing everything you are suppose to be doing. Every baby is different and will grow and develop at her own rate. Before you know it, all the worries of the first few weeks will be a distant memory you will look back on.
Second, the law of impermanence. You and your baby will constantly change day to day. When you are having lows, remember this too will evolve and change so be patient. When you are having highs, savor the moments as this too will change.
