April Mom of the Month: Katie Hess-Yoder

Meet our April Mom of the Month and dedicated Body Backer, Katie Hess-Yoder!

Tell us about yourself and your family.

My husband and I moved to Seattle from NYC about 5 years ago. While it's taken this northeast girl a while to adjust, I can't picture a more perfect place for us to raise our family. We have two miniature nasty woman... Emma is two and Briana is almost 8 months. I'm an attorney and my husband is a pilot. In our spare time we love hiking, skiing, catching a Sounders game, and grabbing a drink with friends. We're always up for new adventures!

What surprised you the most once you became a mom?

What I am capable of... whether it's how little sleep I can function on, that I can make dinner for a toddler while simultaneously bouncing a baby to sleep, or how much love can fill my heart when my kids smile at me, I continue to be surprised at what I can now do and feel.

Why did you join FIT4MOM? Why do you love it?

I originally joined FIT4MOM when I was on maternity leave with my second child. With my family's crazy schedule, I thought it was my only chance to lose a few lbs before getting back into the rat race. It was just gonna be a quick 8 weeks to help me fit into actual pants again. Boy, was I wrong. I found a piece of me I didn't know was missing since I became a mom - time for ME! Taking that time every week for myself (and releasing endorphins while doing it) has made me a better mother, wife, worker, and person. The days I go to class I have more energy, am more calm, laugh more, and find a bit more swagger in my step (even when it hurts to move).

I also love the community Emily has created. The mamas I have met are truly bad ass, and I love how everyone supports and lifts each other up (in and outside of the class).

Where do you see yourself in 5 years? If you didn't have any obstacles, what dream would you pursue?

On a beach with a cold drink! Seriously... we used to travel ALL the time, but haven't traveled just for fun in years.

As for what dream I would pursue, I always wanted to be a National Geographic photographer - traveling the world, taking photos, and educating people about different cultures and ways of life.

What is your favorite go to piece of baby gear?

Not exactly "baby" gear, but our large exercise ball... you know, the one you are supposed to do crunches and other kick ass workouts on. We use it instead of a rocking chair to get the baby to sleep. Works like a charm every time!

Any advice for new moms?

GRACE... have it for your family, friends, etc, but most importantly yourself. Give yourself room to make mistakes and not be the perfect mom you pictured yourself being. You are a mom, and god knows how many other things... you are amazing.
